One of the greatest innovations of our times is the carbon nanotube, which is a carbon atom that is built into cylindrical structure. There is a strong bond existing between each of these atoms and as a result carbon nanotubes have high mechanical strength, one that is far greater than what is seen in industrial fibers or steel.

A variation of the normal carbon nanotube is the vertically aligned carbon nanotube also known as VANTAs. Here the carbon nanotubes are aligned in a straight line to their longitudinal axes. Such is the qualities of VANTAs that they are used in a variety of electronic device applications.

There are so many applications for VANTAs, one of the most important being their use in telescopes, microscopes, spectroscopes, optical sensing devices. Here they are used to enhance their resolution. VANTAs have the ability to absorb light on their surface hence you can also find them used to increase the heat absorbing capacity of materials that are used in technology that powers solar power. You can also find them begin used in this way in thermal camouflage which is used in the military.

You can also twist them into spun CNT yarn which can be used in so many different ways. The strength of the yarn offers excellent results in the desired application. We all know the problem in rise of carbon gases and how much they are polluting the environment. They are a global threat and something must be done to stop their harmful effect. Scientists have found out that vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have the ability to absorb and store greenhouse gases. It has the strength to take in carbon di oxide and sulphur dioxide thus eliminating them from the environment.

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes applications have changed the science and technology environment drastically. The many other applications of VANTAs is in dry adhesive films, gas sensor, transistors, batteries, super capacitors etc. Due to their versatile usage they are much sought after and are increasingly being investigated for their many unique properties through which newer fields of application can be uncovered.

The reason why they are thought of as a good candidate for new discoveries in the field of science and technology is their special qualities. These include high carbon purity, high ability to conduct electricity, long length and large surface area. However there may be situations in which their intrinsic properties have to be modified so that they can meet the demands of the applications in which they are used.
